The Wabanaki Alliance will hold an event July 13 to celebrate the strong alliances we have built since our inception in 2020. Nihkaniyane: Let’s Go Forward Together will be held from 5:30 pm to 7 pm on Thursday, July 13 at the Mallet Barn, Wolfe’s Neck Center, in Freeport.

In 2020, the Mi’kmaq Nation, Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians, Passamaquoddy Tribe, and Penobscot Nation joined together to form the Wabanaki Alliance to improve upon the 1980 Maine Indian Claims Settlement Act (MISCA) and educate the public on tribal histories and communities.

While MICSA’s restrictions have resulted in decades of social and economic barriers for the Wabanaki people and surrounding communities, thanks to the partnership of generous supporters, the Alliance has made great strides in educating the people of Maine about this injustice and advocating for recognition of the inherent sovereignty of Wabanaki Nations. Integral to this work is teaching people about Wabanaki communities and history, as well as the realities of contemporary life for Wabanaki Peoples today.

The July 13 celebration recognizes the many relationships we’ve built on both sides of the political aisle and political independents—and our commitment to the work that remains. All funds from this special event will bolster the Wabanaki Alliance’s ongoing work to make sovereignty a reality and educate the public about tribal communities.
